The purpose of Tesla’s newly acquired warehouse in Marysville, Washington, is as of yet unknown.
Ever since its inception, Tesla has been racing against the clock to increase production. The automaker’s first assembly plant was in Fremont, California; today, it operates in three nations and has plans to expand to many more. With this latest purchase, Tesla is increasing its presence in its home market.
The Puget Sound Business Journal first reported Tesla’s new plant after the construction business and property owner announced it.
The 245,000-square-foot building is purported to be utilized for component assembly, though Tesla has not confirmed this. The building is the first tenant of a large new 5.1 million square foot manufacturing hub on the west coast of Washington State.
With plans to increase battery production in North America to preserve EV subsidies, the concept of a small component supplying facility being part of Tesla’s production fleet in the United States clearly fits its MO.
There have been other speculations on the potential uses for the new facility, although their likelihood and applicability vary widely. The new facility has been predicted to contain either automotive parts or finished automobiles.
However, given the distance from here to the closest Tesla factory, that seems highly unlikely. Some have speculated that the new building could be used in tandem with Canada’s planned gigafactory, but given Tesla’s current focus on the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, this seems just as unlikely.
