A new nonprofit organization opened its doors in Bemidji earlier this year. What is the twist? Through community outreach initiatives, this non-profit yoga studio focuses on promoting health equity.
In a dimly lit room and under the direction of a single instructor, people from all aspects of life gather at The Yoga Studio of Bemidji to practice.
Marnee McCormick, the proprietor of The Yoga Studio, explains, “Our mission is to break down any economic, social, or cultural barriers that prevent yoga from being accessible to those who need it.”
Laura Carpenter, an instructor, remarked, “There is so much more to it than physical practice.” A great deal of mental [exercise] is occurring, as well as a great deal of learning how to concentrate inwardly.
Six months ago, the Yoga Studio in Bemidji opened its doors. They recently began offering classes seven days a week at varying levels of experience, making the practice accessible to everyone (and every body), particularly as a non-profit whose mission is to promote health equity in Bemidji.

“Yoga should be available to so many individuals. “I think a lot of people are afraid to try when they enter a studio,” Carpenter said. “‘Non-profit’ makes it seem somewhat more accessible to me. “Much less intimidating”
McCormick explained, “The non-profit aspect was created because it makes us eligible for grants and funding, allowing those who can afford to be here and take yoga to help us pay it forward.”
As a non-profit, The Yoga Studio appears to welcome a variety of organizations. In addition to opening their own entrances, they also open the doors of the businesses they collaborate with.
McCormick stated, “Because we are relatively new, our outreach is just beginning.” “We intend to reach out to a number of different categories of individuals… Our mission is to make yoga’s health benefits accessible to everyone.”
On Saturday, June 17 at 10 a.m., the Yoga Studio will host a class at Bemidji Brewing. This summer, there are also sessions for children.
